Hurricane Shelters for 2005

The Public Works Department has issued its updated list of public hurricane shelters and emergency

medical centres (EMCs) for 2005. Hurricane shelters are provided in each district. They are for persons

whose homes are not hurricane resistant or who live in a location which is considered to be especially at

risk in a particular storm and who do not have an alternate safe shelter. Emergency medical centres

provide shelter for chronically ill persons, the elderly and women in the last three months of pregnancy.

Medical personnel and equipment are provided at EMCs.

Grand Cayman will start the 2005 season with 4100 hurricane shelter spaces, and the Sister Islands with

570.

Approved hurricane shelters for the 2005 hurricane season in Grand

Cayman are:

  • John Gray High School Assembly Hall

  • George Hicks High School Multipurpose Hall

  • George Town Primary School Assembly Hall

  • University College of the Cayman Islands Hall

  • Red Cross Building

  • Prospect Primary School (EMC and public shelter)

  • John A. Cumber Primary School Assembly Hall

  • John A. Cumber Primary School - some classrooms

  • East End Primary School

  • Gun Bay Community Hall

  • East End Civic Centre (EMC and public shelter)

  • North Side Civic Centre (EMC and public shelter)

  • Breakers Community Hall

  • Bodden Town Primary School Multipurpose Hall (EMC and public shelter)

  • Savannah Primary School Assembly Hall (EMC and public shelter)

Shelters for Cayman Brac are:

  • Ashton Rutty Centre (EMC & public shelter)

  • West End Primary School

The hurricane shelter for Little Cayman is:

  • The Public Works Department Building (EMC and public shelter)

The emergency medical centres for the 2005 hurricane season are:

  • Nurses Health Centre, West Bay (EMC only)

  • Prospect Primary School (EMC and public shelter)

  • East End Civic Centre (EMC and public shelter)

  • North Side Civic Centre (EMC and public shelter)

  • Bodden Town Primary School Multipurpose Hall (EMC and public shelter)

  • Savannah Primary School Assembly Hall (EMC and public shelter)

  • Cayman Brac’s Ashton Rutty Centre (EMC & public shelter)

  • Little Cayman’s Public Works Department Building (EMC and public shelter)

The Bodden Town Civic Centre and the Islay Connolly Hall, which were severely damaged during Hurricane

Ivan, will not be available as shelters this season. To compensate for this loss, PWD has adjusted shelter

capacity from 20 square feet per person down to 15 square feet per person. This will enable more persons

to be housed in the remaining shelters, and will bring the proposed capacity more in line with actual

capacities experienced during Ivan, Mr Jones said.

Government is also negotiating with a number of private sector companies who have hurricane rated

buildings to shelter their employees and families, thereby reducing the demand for public shelter

spaces.
