Road Closures/Cordons

Published 20th October, 7:09pm

Wave action created by Hurricane Wilma continues to cause flooding, impacting road conditions. Among initiatives, the RCIPS has announced some road closures and strictly enforced cordons to assure public safety.

The RCIPS assures the community that there will be a strong Police presence on the streets to ensure the safety of the public and the protection of property during this severe weather warning. The public's safety is of the utmost importance to the RCIPS.

The RCIPS therefore continues to urge the public to use commonsense and to obey the warnings and directions given by officers.

Above all, members of the public should stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. Under no circumstances should anyone be considering sightseeing excursions. Road travel is risky for all vehicular traffic, given the conditions at this time. Unnecessary travel will compound risks, which in turn demands Police resources that may be required elsewhere.

Members of the public are also asked to stay away from beaches and definitely not to engage in recreational swimming. All marine interests are reminded to remain in safe harbour and not to venture out to sea.

Road Closures

The public is advised that the following road closures have been put into effect in central George Town to ensure safety:

North Church Street, South Church Street, Harbour Drive, Mary Street and Bodden's Road.

Motorists should select alternate routes and if possible not to travel anywhere near these roads.

Some portions of these roads have reported 12" of settled water, in some cases combined with displaced asphalt and other debris.

There is also risk of increased wave action later this evening and overnight, contributing to further intrusion of sea water.

Other RCIP directives on major roadways:

1. The diversion remains in effect on the West Bay Road between Indies Suites and Governor's Harbour. This provision to ease traffic must remain in place in order to allow Public Works to remove debris from the areas of the West Bay Road between either end of the diversion.

2. The road from Bodden Town to George Town is closed to all members of the public at this time. Only emergency services personnel will be allowed through.

Appeal for Special Constables to Contact RCIPS
