Disaster Management Adviser for the UK Government Roger Bellers joined the National Hurricane Committee for its 10:30 meeting this morning (Sunday, 19 August).
His main role, he explained, will be to assist the NHC and to communicate Cayman's needs, post-disaster, to the UK Government.
He will also communicate directly with overseas aid organisations, such as the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) and the regional headquarters for the Red Cross in Panama to help fast track delivery of supplies necessary for satisfying unmet humanitarian needs. He confirmed that the Bermuda Regiment is also on standby to assist with any possible law enforcement issues.
His message was reinforced by the Leader of Government Business, the Hon. Kurt Tibbetts, JP, who mentioned that he'd received a call from Bermudan Premier Dr. the Hon. Ewart Brown JP, MP, this morning. The premier, he said, has promised to do whatever he can to assist Cayman in its recovery.
Traveling some miles behind Hurricane Dean are two UK destroyer ships. They are equipped with boats, a helicopter and emergency supplies and are expected to arrive in Grand Cayman on Monday (20 August) evening. Governor Stuart Jack, who was also at the meeting, said that he had spoken to the captain of the lead ship and that they were as well prepared as they could be.
