RCIPS Curfew In Place

Published 19th August, 9:48pm

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) would like to advise the public that a police curfew is now in operation.

The curfew is designed to keep people safe and out of harms way as much as possible. The curfew will remain in place until weather conditions allow and will be lifted at the earliest opportunity.

It is recognized that there will be people from various entities who will be required to work past curfew times to maintain essential services. Group exemptions will be given to certain employers whose staff can produce work photo identification or a letter from their employer justifying their reason for travel and photographic identification such as a driver's license. Group exemptions will apply to the following industries:

  • All Emergency Services
  • Health Services
  • Utility companies (power, water)
  • Communications companies
  • Food and Fuel Distribution
  • Public Works

Any other employer who believes their staff should be exempt from the curfew will be required to make a written application at their local police station. A list of named essential staff members will be required. All people carrying exemptions will need to produce photographic identification as well as their exemption certificate.

It should be noted that under the police law (2006) officers have the powers to stop, search and arrest anyone caught breaking the curfew. Upon conviction, anyone guilty of breaking the curfew could be liable to a fine of one thousand dollars and to imprisonment for six months.
