Expect Wind and Rain from Olga

3 p.m., Wednesday, 12 December 2007: The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Olga.

The area of cloudiness and thunderstorms associated with this system will move into the Cayman area late tonight, with the most intense portions affecting the Sister Islands Thursday afternoon.

Skies will gradually become cloudy to overcast from late tonight with scattered heavy showers and thundershowers. Rainfall totals of about 1-2 inches are expected for the Sister Islands & up to 1 inch for Grand Cayman from early Thursday through Friday evening.

Northerly to northeasterly winds with speeds of around 25-30 mph and higher gusts, especially in squalls, are expected as the system moves through our area. A shift to southerly winds will occur by tomorrow evening. Seas will become rough from late tonight with 6-8 ft waves affecting the north and west coasts of all Islands through tomorrow.

All marine interests should seek safe harbour from this evening. Residents of low-lying and coastal areas should take all necessary precautions.

AT 4 PM EST...2100 UTC...THE GOVERNMENT OF THE BAHAMAS HAS DISCONTINUED ALL TROPICAL STORM WARNINGS.

FOR STORM INFORMATION SPECIFIC TO YOUR AREA...INCLUDING POSSIBLE INLAND WATCHES AND WARNINGS...PLEASE MONITOR PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL WEATHER OFFICE.

AT 400 PM EST...2100Z...THE CENTER OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION OLGA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 18.9 NORTH...LONGITUDE 76.9 WEST OR ABOUT 65 MILES...100 KM...NORTH OF KINGSTON JAMAICA AND ABOUT 280 MILES...455 KM...EAST OF GRAND CAYMAN.

THE DEPRESSION IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 23 MPH...AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED TO CONTINUE FOR THE NEXT 24 HOURS.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 35 MPH...55 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. OLGA COULD DEGENERATE INTO A REMNANT LOW TONIGHT.

ESTIMATED MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS 1007 MB...29.74 INCHES.

OLGA IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE ADDITIONAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN BAHAMAS. RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE OVER EASTERN CUBA...WITH ISOLATED MAXIMUM ACCUMULATIONS OF 8 INCHES. ADDITIONAL RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 1 TO 2 INCHES ARE POSSIBLE OVER HISPANIOLA...WITH ISOLATED STORM TOTAL AMOUNTS OF 10 INCHES. THESE RAINS ARE EXPECTED TO PRODUCE LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODS AND MUD SLIDES IN HISPANIOLA.

REPEATING THE 400 PM EST POSITION...18.9 N...76.9 W. MOVEMENT TOWARD...WEST NEAR 23 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...35 MPH.
