Tropical Storm Fay Update

Key messages:

  • Sister Islands are under a tropical storm WARNING.
  • Grand Cayman is under a tropical storm WATCH.
  • All residents should continue to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Fay.
  • TS Fay is forecast to move west-northwest, passing north of Jamaica tonight and along the Cuban south coast, or near 89 miles north of the Sister Islands tomorrow afternoon (Sunday, 17 August).

Advice to local population:

  • Residents should maintain a state of readiness. Tropical Storm Fay may deposit 1.50 to 2.00 inches of rainfall from Sunday morning through Monday morning, causing flooding of low-lying areas, particularly in the Sister Islands.
  • All marine interests in the Sister Islands should seek safe harbor on Saturday evening, and remain there.

Weather details from the National Hurricane Centre, as of 10 p.m. Saturday, 16 August

  • Tropical Storm Fay was located near 19.4 N 76.3 W or 102 miles north of Kingston, Jamaica.
  • Fay is moving west at 16 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.
  • Based on this path the band of tropical storm-force winds are forecast to pass north of the Cayman area. However, satellite pictures show a significant amount of cloudiness and thundershowers south of the center.
  • The Cayman Islands can expect cloudy to overcast weather, with intermittent showers and some thunder.
  • The Cayman Islands can expect strong north to northeast winds of 15 to 20 knots tonight, and 20 to 25 knots tomorrow, leading to very rough seas with waves heights of 6 to 8 feet, especially near the Sister Islands.
