Hurricane Gustav update: 8:00p.m. Friday, 29 August 2008
From the Joint Communications Service (JCS), Cayman Islands National Emergency Operations Centre
Key messages:
- A hurricane WARNING remains in effect for the Cayman Islands since Gustav is a category 1 hurricane.
- At 7:00p.m. local time the centre of Hurricane Gustav was located near 19.3N and 80.0W, or 25 miles south of the Sister Islands and 90 miles east of Grand Cayman. Gustav is moving northwest near 11 mph, with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph. Further strengthening is likely tonight as Gustav moves away from our area.
- So far over 4 inches of rainfall and wind speeds of over 60 mph have been recorded over Cayman Brac while Grand Cayman wind speeds have reached 40 mph.
- Residents of all three islands should now be indoors and should remain there until the all clear is given.
