Gustav Now a Category 2

Hurricane Gustav Update: 5:00 a.m. Saturday, 30 August 2008

Key Messages

  1. At 1 a.m. local time Gustav, a category 2 hurricane, was located near 20.2 N 81.3 W or 64 miles north of Grand Cayman.
  2. The storm is moving northwest near 12 mph with maximum sustained winds near 110 mph. Further strengthening is likely.
  3. Winds over the Sister Islands have dropped below hurricane force and will continue to decrease to below tropical storm force by around 9 a.m.
  4. Tropical storm force winds will linger over Grand Cayman until about 1 p.m.
  5. For the next 24 hours, wave heights of 14 to 16 feet can be expected, particularly along the west and south coasts of Grand Cayman.
  6. Rain-bands associated with Gustav will continue to affect the Cayman Islands for the next 24 hours with rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches likely.
  7. Residents are reminded to stay indoors until authorities have an opportunity to check the Islands' roads and other facilities. In addition residents are urged to stay away from, and out of, the sea.
